At this stage we will conduct research to establish how best to approach the design.

Depending on the idea, a Feasibility Study may be desirable.

Research
For a given functional specification, there is often more than one way to achieve the desired result. At this stage alternative routes will be devised and assessed, in the light of cost, timescale, reliability, and adherence to applicable standards.

Feasibility Study
A Feasibility Study is required when it is not clear whether the requirements can be met within the stated constraints. It may be necessary to mock up some solutions for testing. These would usually take the form of breadboard models, and the successful option would form the basis for the design stage.

Feasibility Study
If you are not clear how to proceed, you may need a feasibility study.
