Golf Swing Analyser (Gee-Swing)

Project: A training device to help golfers to improve their swing

When we were approached to design a device to improve a golfer's swing, it seemed a fairly simple task. Until, that is, we discovered just how difficult it is to make meaningful measurements on such a complex motion. Nevertheless, our client was determined to develop such a product, so we set to work.


The first step was to research the physics of a golf swing. Finding little useful existing data, we set up our own field trials with help from our local driving range. Making the measurements was the next problem, which we solved by designing and building the necessary measuring equipment. The results were logged on a laptop.


Following in-depth mathematical analysis of the data, the product design began. Immediately another problem arose. The product needed to incorporate a very accurate accelerometer, but none was available at a sensible price. There was no option but for us to design a custom sensor, which is what we did. We also designed a custom LCD, which we believe to be the smallest of its type in current production. 

 

Circuit design, PCB layout, software and mechanical design all came together to produce a small, lightweight product, which clips on to the shaft of a golf club. It measures acceleration produced during a swing, and then performs an analysis, resulting in visual data which indicates how the golfer can improve their swing.
