Once the design is complete, and a prototype has been constructed and successfully tested, you will normally want to make some units using production techniques.
Some designs require only prototype quantities, where others require larger volumes. In the latter case it is a good idea to have a small quantity made first for market research, pre-launch samples for distributors, reviewers, etc.
