During the design phase of the recently completed passenger intercommunications refurbishment at the Washington DC Metropolitan Transit System, a problem arose when the proposed system failed to meet accessibility regulations.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires distinct indicators at each call point to show the status of each call placement and call acknowledgement. The equipment chosen did not meet this requirement, and the manufacturers were unable to make the necessary changes using the same equipment.

Project Electronics were approached to look at the issue, and we designed a simple add-on module which solved the problem without the need for an additional power supply at every call point.

Over a 2-year period, all 85 stations within the Washington DC metropolitan area were upgraded with single, dual, or multiple kiosks. In addition, 185 elevators and 160 machine rooms were equipped, involving more than 800 units in all.

The system is now fully operational, enhancing the safety of the 700,000 people who travel on the network daily
